THE MANY WAYS WE SHOW UP
Our network is making an impact every day metrowide, but this week has been especially exciting. Teams have been out teaching, demonstrating, and telling stories in three boroughs from Morris Park to Washington Heights and Williamsburg — and of course online.
Here’s a snapshot of 10 ways we’ve made a difference just since Monday:
🌱
Older adults at JASA’s Williamsburg Center enjoyed a bean salad with Sergio and Kele in a bilingual demo focused on foods for brain health.
🌱
Jewish organizations with an interest in climate action learned from Lianna the case for plant-powered eating, and the ways that NYC is using its purchasing power to change menus. (Catch the replay.)
🌱
Staff appreciation week at Teachers College included a special Food for Life class with Chef Brandy and Vicki, tasting a bean chili and a beet and citrus salad.
🌱
More Teachers College community members got inspired through the health transformation stories featured in a panel of PPMNY volunteers and clinicians.
🌱
Caregivers of young children connected to the Queens Public Library joined a virtual Food for Life class with instructors Danielle and Louise, exploring foods for a healthy heart, like a curried lentil and tomato stew.
🌱
The famed Good Housekeeping kitchen at Hearst got a visit from Chef Rebecca and Enrica who wowed employees with a demo featuring a berry jicama salad, lentil meatballs, and chocolate avocado pudding.
🌱
Patients and staff at Centro Mèdico Dominicano wrapped up their Food for Life cooking classes on diabetes exploring natural weight loss with plant foods, tasting a bean salad and a strawberry chia pudding whipped up by Aifra and Bryant.
🌱
Employees of NYC Health + Hospitals tuned in for a National Nutrition Month demo where Chef Rebecca got creative with tofu, including a Caribbean-style plant-based griot.
🌱
Chef Anthony put a Thai spin on everyone’s favorite sweet potatoes in today’s Roots Live! demo on YouTube. (Catch the replay.)
🌱
Older adult patients from Montefiore-Einstein and their caregivers participated in the first diabetes nutrition and cooking class in a series that studies the impact of plant-based nutrition on their day-to-day health.
3 days. 10 teams. 18 educators, panelists, and assistants. 8 community partners. 5 live venues. And even more amazing people working behind the scenes to make it all work seamlessly. This is the power of our movement!
With two weeks left until our 5th anniversary celebration in Bushwick, we’re opening our silent auction for bidding, which will culminate at the event and close at 8:30 PM ET on April 3rd. More items will be added in the next few days!
There’s just one week left to sign up for the event itself, and the room is filling up! Celebrate all that we’ve accomplished together, and help us honor some incredible movers and shakers in our local community. With live music, a sit-down meal, community chef tastings, speakers, and a raffle, this is a milestone not to be missed!
Thank you to our give-away, raffle, and silent auction contributors:
and PPMNY community members Jill Danenberg and Elaine Perlman.
If you’ve successfully made the transition to a health-promoting plant-based lifestyle and want to support others in making change, talk to us about becoming a Lifestyle Mentor with PPMNY! Our next round of training will take place on Thursdays, April 11 and 18, from 6:30 - 9:00 PM ET — both dates are required.
To be eligible to participate, you’ll need to have at least one year of experience with a whole food, plant-based lifestyle, and experience eating mostly unprocessed plant foods (not just a vegan diet). Mentor training will be led by Sherry Jarrett, PPMNY’s Network Training Organizer. Contact Sherry by Wednesday, April 3, to express your interest and learn more!
And there’s more: Join us in Southeast Queens for a special series presented by the Queens Public Library:
