WE STAND UP FOR BLACK HEALTH
Life expectancy in the US during the pandemic took a big hit, but it’s ticking back up. This chart from the NYC Department of Health shows the goal of increased lifespan by 2030 through their new initiative, HealthyNYC, creating a vision for how to improve life expectancy and a healthier city for all.
But did you spot the huge disparity? Black life expectancy is many years lower than other races. Premature death in the Black community happens for many reasons, including higher rates of stroke and heart disease.
That’s why we’re elevating Black History Month alongside Heart Health Month — both celebrated in February — and the role of whole food, plant-based nutrition as a critical strategy for health equity. Our goal is to support Black communities in accessing nourishing plant foods, building the skills and confidence to prepare wholesome plant-based meals, and reconnecting with the many plant food staples that fueled Black health for millennia.

NYC Health and Hospitals/Harlem’s Community Day featured many local vendors, including PPMNY and our food! We met and chatted with many patients and staff, discussing how a whole food, plant-based diet can be used in the treatment of chronic disease. Sergio Villavicencio, PPMNY team member, presented a live cooking demonstration of a hearty lentil soup, serving more than 150 people who came by!
There was no shortage of fun times or healing foods as we gathered in Manhattan on Monday night for a flavorful Ayurvedic dinner social at Divya’s Kitchen. Friends and community members dined on a curated menu of salads, veggie bowls, vegan lasagna, and pecan chocolate chip cookies.
What if most of our health problems could be solved in one swoop? From February 17 - 25, Better Life Summits is producing The Truth About Weight Loss, a free online series. The host will be long-time PPMNY favorite and Plantathon participant, Chef AJ — who has an incredible story of lifestyle change in her 50s. The eight-day event will feature 45 of the world's leading weight loss experts and success stories to help you lose weight and keep it off without all the stress and restrictions. NYC Health + Hospitals has launched a new podcast, The Remedy, featuring leaders and healthcare providers from the nation’s largest municipal healthcare system. On the podcast, host Michael Shen, MD, speaks to health system leaders, experts, and specialists on topics affecting patients, New Yorkers, and the nation. The most recent episode, “Food Is Medicine,” discusses H+H’s popular Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine Program with Michelle McMacken, MD, supporting patients with lifestyle change as they learn to cook plant-powered meals, read nutrition labels, exercise, and more.
