LEAP INTO A HEALTHY NEW YEAR!

“My A1c [a marker of diabetes] is down to 5.9. It’s been as high as 6.2 since I’m pre-diabetic, and for the last 6 years I haven’t been able to move the needle below 6.0, so I’m pretty excited about that. My glucose is now at 72, and it’s been as high as 102.”

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, PPMNY is uniting communities to stand up for a more inclusive food future through our Health Freedom Walks. Join us for our 2nd annual plant-powered restaurant crawl while paying tribute to Dr. King’s enduring legacy of justice.

We’ll start our walks at places of significance to the civil rights movement and then proceed to eateries where chefs have curated delicious plant-powered dishes for our groups. Hold your spot for just $5 by registering below for a location near you! All dishes will be approximately $10 or less.

Thanks to more than 175 generous supporters, we reached our target of raising (and exceeding!) $100,000 by the end of 2023. Not only are we grateful for your belief in our work, but we’re getting excited to do even more in the year ahead! Our plans include…

🌱

A virtual series on nutrition for brain health.

🌱

New educational partnerships with great organizations like the Coalition for Behavioral Health, WorkWell NYC, and the Food Revolution Network.

🌱

Celebrating our 5th anniversary in March.

🌱

Four more Plant Powered Jumpstarts before the summer: one for the public (coming up next!), one for Spanish speakers later this spring, one for the staff of NYC Health + Hospitals, and one as a study with patients who have received a kidney transplant.

🌱

More cooking classes, peer mentorship, and public events for learning and community-building.

New York Governor Signs Bill to Connect Doctors to Nutrition Training

Last month, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a bill requiring the New York State Education Department and New York State Department of Health to provide physicians with an online resource library that will include “plant-based nutrition, clinically proven methods for the prevention, reversal, and treatment of diet-related illnesses, and informational resources regarding racial disparities in outcomes for diet-related diseases.” Since many healthcare professionals lack training in evidence-based nutrition, this bill will ensure that more physicians have access to key information that can affect how they practice medicine.
